Dr Conor O’Luanaigh is an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist with dual specialist training in the areas of Older Adults Psychiatry and General Adult & Liaison Psychiatry. He is the current Clinical Director in Older Persons Mental Health & Consultation Liaison Mental Health at The Prince Charles Hospital, Brisbane, having accepted the position in 2016. Prior experience includes Consultant Psychiatrist posts in Victoria and Ireland. He has developed particular expertise in the assessment of neurocognitive disorders.
Dr O’Luanaigh believes in a holistic shared problem-solving approach to the assessment and management of mental health problems. He has a strong commitment to medical education and is a Senior Lecturer in Psychiatry with the University of Queensland and Chief Trainee Supervisor for psychiatry trainees at The Prince Charles Hospital. He is currently chair of the Queensland Psychotropic Medications Advisory Committee.
Qualifications: M.B., B.Ch., BAO., MRCPsych., F.R.A.N.Z.C.P., CSCST Old Age Psychiatry & General Adult Psychiatry ( Liaison)., Member of the Faculty of Older Adults Psychiatrists (FPOA)
- Comprehensive assessment and diagnosis of neurocognitive disorders (dementias)
- Mood disorders in older adults, with a particular interest in loneliness and how it affects wellbeing
- Liaison psychiatry: psychiatric and psychological illnesses related to physical illnesses, including mood disorders secondary to or complicated by physical health issues
- Provision of comprehensive mental health assessments with development of mental health care plan for general adult patients (Medicare Item 291)
Treatments: Individual Psychological and psychiatric treatment including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT, interpersonal psychotherapy ( IPT), pharmacotherapy (where appropriate)

Availability: Currently accepting new referrals. Dr O’Luanaigh is happy to accept referrals in the areas outlined above. He will be consulting at The Brisbane Specialist Suites every Tuesday evening from 5-8pm and a Saturday clinic 8.30-15.30 once per month.
Dr. Conor O’Luanaigh completed his medical degree at Trinity College Dublin in 2001. Following his intern year, he moved to Australia and worked as a medical officer in Geriatrics, Psychiatry and Acute Medicine in the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth. He returned to Ireland in 2003 and took up a place in the Trinity College Psychiatry Training Scheme. He successful completed tis training in 2006 and became a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists UK (MRCPsych). Following this he worked as a research fellow and clinical lecture in Old Age Psychiatrist in the Mercer’s Institute for Research in Ageing. During this time he gained extensive expertise working in a tertiary memory clinic. He also was one of the lead investigators in the Dublin Health Ageing Study with his focus being on the impact of loneliness on health in older adults. In 2011 he moved to Australia to take up a post as consultant old age psychiatrist in Warrnambool in Victoria and worked there till 2016 when he moved to Brisbane to take up the Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist Post in The Prince Charles Hospital. In 2019 he became the Clinical Director in Older Persons Mental Health in the Prince Charles Hospital.
Dr. O’Luanaigh is passionate about healthy ageing and promoting an active lifestyle for adults of all ages. Due to his specialist training in Consultation Liaison Psychiatry he understands the inherent connections between mind and body that regulate and promote good physical and mental health.
